Today, we join Catholics across South Africa in joyfully welcoming Cardinal Stephen Brislin as the newly appointed Archbishop of Johannesburg.

His appointment, succeeding the dedicated leadership of retiring Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, was formally announced from Rome at 13:00 South African time. Cardinal Brislin’s transition from his current role as Archbishop of Cape Town to this new chapter in Johannesburg is met with heartfelt congratulations from the faithful in the Diocese of Kimberley and beyond.

At 68, Cardinal Brislin steps into his new role carrying with him a wealth of experience, spiritual dedication, and a profound commitment to service. Throughout his years of ministry, he has demonstrated unwavering pastoral care, advocacy for justice, and compassionate leadership, all rooted in his deep faith and love for the people of God. His tenure in Cape Town has been marked by efforts to bridge social divides, support the most vulnerable, and uplift communities through practical, faith-driven initiatives. Now, as he embarks on this new mission, we are confident that he will continue to lead with humility, strength, and a heart open to God’s will.

We also take this moment to extend our deep gratitude to Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, who has been a shepherd to Johannesburg for many years. His ministry has been a testament to endurance and wisdom, having guided the diocese through times of great change and challenge. At 76, as he retires from his role, Archbishop Tlhagale leaves behind a legacy of faith, unity, and resilience, inspiring those who will follow in his footsteps.

For the Church in South Africa, this transition is a significant moment, one that reflects both continuity and growth in our mission to serve. We trust that Cardinal Brislin will continue to nurture this legacy, enriching the diocese through his ministry as Archbishop of Johannesburg. The Diocese of Kimberley offers its prayers and support to him in his new appointment, confident that he will lead with grace and fortitude, uniting us in faith and service.

Let us, as one community, pray for God’s blessings upon Cardinal Brislin as he assumes his role, and may the Holy Spirit guide him, as well as all of us, in our shared mission to bring Christ’s love to the world.
